In my work, I often speak of threads, resonance, and coherence. These are not merely metaphors; they are the mechanics of narrative architecture. To understand the story is to understand the loom.
Algorithm: Derived from Al-Khwarizmi. In modern weaving, the algorithm is the "Sett" for the digital loom, translating logic into beauty.
Constellation: A structure where individual "stars" (projects like Wilhelmina or Arzu) are connected by an underlying symbolic architecture. On the surface they look different, but underneath they share the same "cathedral" logic.
The Cathedral Pattern: A creative ecosystem where diverse arts (music, text, illustration) work together to build one unified, mythic world.
Intersection: The literal point where warp and weft meet, causing colors to deepen and new shades to emerge. This is where Story Happens—the friction between a character’s internal truth and the world’s external demands.
Sett: The specific, repeating sequence of thread colors and widths that defines a tartan’s identity. In storytelling, the sett is the internal logic—the foundational "code" of a world that ensures every event and character arc remains coherent.
Story Engine: The structural heart of a narrative. It designs the "orbit" of characters and the "weaving" of themes around a central core tension to ensure the story remains resonant.
Texere: The ancient Latin root for both text and textile, meaning "to weave". It serves as a reminder that every written word is a thread being pulled through a larger tapestry of meaning.
The Digital Loom: A modern evolution of the craft where algorithms and artificial intelligence serve as the new instruments of creation. While the tools evolve, the ancient intent remains: to find the moment where the pattern reveals the soul.
Theme Threads: Recurring symbols or ideas—such as memory, sea imagery, or restoration—that echo across a story to create coherence.
Warp: The vertical threads held under constant tension on the loom. These represent the Character Arc—the firm, unwavering spine of the narrative that provides the structure for everything else to cross.
Weft: The horizontal threads woven over and under the warp. These are the World-Building and Events—the shifting experiences and external forces that intersect with the character to create the visible pattern of a life.
